Wonderful winter walks in Devon

What better way to walk off all that festive food and drink or banish those winter blues than with a ramble through nature. Why not add some new walks to your 2022 to-do list and come explore some of our favourite winter walks around North Devon.

Baggy Point – a must-do when you visit here. Walk alongside spectacular views of the ocean’s rolling waves, with its steep drops it’s not one for the faint-hearted. At the tip of the peninsula, you’ll have panoramic views of Bideford Bay, Hartland Point and Lundy Island. Spot sea birds on the rugged cliffs and even seals in the bay, oh, and look out for the preserved whale bones on display along the way.

Valley of the Rocks – venturing deeper into Devon, come and discover a hidden gem as you stroll along the South West Coast Path, from Lynton to the famous Valley of the Rocks. Scramble up some of the spectacular rock formations for an Insta-worthy photoshoot complete with sea view backdrops. You even may be lucky enough to stumble upon a herd of friendly wild goats who live around here – who wants a selfie?!

Codden Hill – Devon is well known for its coastal landscape but, venture inland a little way and discover green rolling hills and ancient forests. In the village of Bishop’s Tawton, you’ll find several footpaths leading up to Codden Hill. Rising 190 metres, climb up and be rewarded with views reaching across to Dartmoor in the south and Exmoor to the north. We love the ‘whale-backed’ hills you can see looking from west to east. Why not pack a Thermos or a bottle to take with you and make a toast to your achievement?

Watersmeet – a gorgeous and romantic setting, straight out of a fairy tale. Starting in Lynmouth, follow the energetic waters of the East Lyn River gorge, encased by steep cliffs until you reach the confluence at Watersmeet. Here you’ll discover a peaceful scene with little cascades and small pools. Whether you’re after a short trail or a longer hike, there are options aplenty here and be sure to stop by the Watersmeet Tea Rooms to enjoy a tasty Cream Tea while you’re there!
