Discover Clovelly

There’s more to North Devon than just our picturesque coast (although we must admit it’s pretty breath-taking!) make the most of your Devon retreat by venturing further along the coast to discover the pretty, historic fishing village of Clovelly.

Step back in time…

Once belonging to British royalty, it’s cobbled streets and chocolate box, flower strewn cottages lead down to the working harbour quay dating back to the 14th Century where you can take in the Insta-worthy views!

Privately owned…

You pay a small entrance fee that covers a short 20-minute film of the village history, car parking, upkeep of the Court Gardens and admission to two museums. You can even get yourself a local guide to add a personalised touch - these guys are full of knowledge and know all the hidden gems and stories often missed by most!

Watch your step…

Clovelly is very steep, and the bonus is, no cars are allowed in adding to its peaceful setting. Instead, locals use wooden sledges to transport their daily shopping up abs down the main cobbled street. Donkeys used to be the chosen form of transportation - often carrying basket loads of freshly caught herring, then replaced for tourists and their luggage to get to the hotels and guest houses. Keep an eye out as these furry friends are still around, but nowadays they enjoy a slower pace of life in retirement.

Festivals a plenty…

Clovelly hosts several festivals throughout the year so check their events to find out what’s on during your Devon retreat. They have an annual Herring Festival and a Lobster and Crab Feast, celebrating their heritage and deep connection with the sea. The Maritime Festival is great fun, watching the Clovelly Cup yacht race across the bay or cheer on the Gig Regatta as they take on the powerful North Devon waves. Enjoy a more relaxed pace with open air theatre performances and live music through the summer months. Keep up to speed on all the events here.

There’s so much history and adventure to discover on a retreat to the North Devon coast. What adventures could be waiting around the corner for you?
