Frequently asked questions

How many people will be on the retreat?

You can expect there to be between 6 and 15 guests on your retreat.

How do I get to Saunton Sands?

By car: Put EX33 1LQ in your satnav (the full address is Saunton Sands Hotel, Saunton, Near Braunton, EX33 1LQ). There’s free parking at the hotel.

By train: The nearest railway station is Barnstaple (a taxi from there to the hotel takes around 20 minutes). If you’re coming from London, there’s a fast train to Tiverton Parkway and you can then take a taxi (around one hour).

By air: Exeter Airport is 60 miles from Saunton Sands and you can take a taxi from there.

We have a recommended taxi company so please let us know if you’d like a cost estimate or if you’d like us to make a booking for you.

Do most people come to the retreat on their own?

Our retreats are open to anyone – come on your own, in a couple or with a group of mates. We’re sure you’ll make new friends while you’re here.

Do I have to share a room?

As the retreat takes place in a 4 star hotel, we offer a variety of rooms. If you come with your partner or a friend, you can share a double/twin room. If you attend the retreat on your own, you’ll get your own room.

What shall I bring?

As you’ll be doing stuff inside and outside on your retreat, we recommend you bring the following kit:

  • Workout gear
  • Yoga gear (or comfortable clothing that you can easily move around in)
  • Trainers
  • Walking boots or other suitable footwear
  • Waterproofs
  • Swimwear
  • Wetsuit and booties (if you have them – if not, we’ll hire them for you at no extra cost)
  • Goggles
  • Water bottle
  • Other clothing for dinner etc

Do I need to have a certain level of ability to take part in the retreat?

Not at all! Everyone is welcome – whether you’re a complete beginner in any of the activities or more advanced.

What kinds of fitness classes can I expect?

Our classes cover a range of workouts, including HIIT, Abs, Bums, Strength, Boxing and Kettlebells. We’ll speak to you before your retreat so that we can tailor the classes for the group.

I’d like to surf / do yoga but I’ve never tried it before – is that OK?

Our surf lessons are available for beginners or more advanced surfers. If you’re just starting out, we’ll teach you the basics. If you’ve surfed before, we’ll give you a more advanced lesson, including technical advice. It’s the same for yoga – our classes are suitable for any level. If you’ve never done it before, we’d love to introduce you to yoga in a safe and supportive environment.

I’ve got an injury / I’m recovering from an illness – is it OK to come on the retreat?

Kate is qualified in rehabilitation and cancer recovery training so our retreats might be suitable for you. It depends on the type of injury or illness you have had as it’s important to rest your body so you can recuperate properly. Please let us know your situation and we can help you to make a decision.

I’m pregnant / I recently had a baby – can I still attend the retreat?

Kate and Aimee are qualified in pre natal and post natal fitness and yoga, so we’d be very happy for you to attend. Please give us a call to discuss your personal requirements so we can make sure our schedule works for you.

Do I have to do every activity in the schedule?

No, the whole point of Sand Sea Spa retreats is that everything is optional. You might only want to surf and do yoga. Or you might just want to take our fitness classes and go for coastal walks. That’s absolutely fine. Think of our schedule as a menu – you can decide on the day and do as little or as much as you want.

Are the spa treatments included in the retreat cost?

The spa treatments are an additional cost as not everybody on the retreat will choose to have them. The hotel spa offers a range of fantastic treatments, including facials, massages and wellness therapies. You can find details and prices here. Treatments are a really popular addition to the retreat experience so please book them in as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Is wetsuit and surfboard hire included in the price?

Yes. If you’d like to take part in the surf lessons, wet-suit and surfboard hire is included in your retreat cost.

I have a food allergy or other dietary requirement – do you cater for that?

If you let us know about any allergies or other requirements in advance, we can let the head chef at the hotel know so that he can cater for you.

I’m vegan – what meal options will I have?

There is a full vegan menu available for the retreat. Please let us know about your requirements in advance.

Will I lose weight on the retreat?

Whilst this isn’t a weight loss/detox retreat, if you have an active weekend with us and eat healthily, you’ll probably notice a difference in your weight.

How does the crèche work?

As you’ll be a resident of the hotel, you’ll get two hours free at the crèche each day. You can also pay for additional hours, if you need them. This is subject to availability and book early to avoid disappointment.

Do you have to book the spa?

It helps if you have a think about when you would like to spend time in the spa and book 48 hours prior to your retreat to ensure it's not full when you want to use it.  However you can also use the spa any time it's not too busy, just check at the spa reception desk if you haven't booked and would like to use it if there is space.
